On Thursday, April 6, 2023, at 3:50 pm, deputies from the Riverside Sheriff’s San Jacinto Station located a stolen vehicle traveling east on Highway 74 in the city of Hemet. Deputies attempted a vehicle enforcement stop at the intersection of Highway 74 and Gilmore Street. The driver of the vehicle fled, attempting to evade deputies. A vehicle pursuit was initiated and traveled through the cities of Hemet, San Jacinto, Beaumont, Banning, and eventually into Cabazon.
The driver of the vehicle, Dennis Smith, a 27-year-old resident of Hemet, and passenger, Tony Williams, a 23-year-old resident of Detroit, Michigan, parked the stolen vehicle and fled into a nearby business within the 49000 block of Seminole Drive, Cabazon. After a short foot chase, Smith and Williams were taken into custody. Deputies located items consistent with vehicle theft and computer equipment.
Smith was later booked into the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility for a multitude of charges, including possession of the known stolen property, resisting arrest, felony evading, and possession of burglary tools. Williams was later booked into the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility for resisting arrest. This investigation is currently ongoing, and no further information will be released at this time.
