Reporting Deputy: Sergeant Robert Grmusha
File # MV230450276
On February 14, 2023, about 1:52 PM, deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office, Moreno Valley Station, responded to the report of a major-injury traffic collision at the intersection of Alessandro Boulevard and Kitching Street, in the city of Moreno Valley. Deputies arrived on-scene to find the collision involved, a black, 2010 Jeep Patriot, a white, 2019 Kia Forte, and two other vehicles that received minor damage. The driver of the Kia was found unconscious inside the passenger compartment suffering from what were later determined to be traumatic life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Kia was transported to a local area hospital where they succumbed to their injuries. The driver of the Jeep was located at the scene with minor injuries and was also transported to a local area hospital for medical treatment. No other party involved in the collision reported any injuries.
The Moreno Valley Sheriff’s Station Traffic Collision Reconstruction Team responded to the scene and assumed the investigation. The preliminary investigation revealed the Jeep was traveling eastbound on Alessandro Boulevard at a high rate of speed when it entered the intersection with Kitching Street, without first stopping for a red signal light. As the Jeep continued through the intersection, it collided with the Kia’s driver side, which caused subsequent collisions with two other vehicles. As the investigation progressed, deputies learned the Jeep was being chased by a white, 2012 Mercedes E350, following a hit and run collision that occurred near the intersection of Perris Boulevard and Bay Street. During that unrelated traffic collision, the Jeep rear-ended the Mercedes, then fled the scene with the Mercedes following. The driver of the Mercedes remained at the scene and cooperated with accident investigators.
At this time, intoxication does not appear to be a factor in this traffic collision. The investigation will remain ongoing as further information and evidence is received. The identities of other involved parties will not be released at this time pending the completion of the investigation.
Due to the necessary collection of evidence and scene processing, including cleanup, a complete closure of the Alessandro Boulevard and Kitching Street intersection was initiated. The road closures involved the closing of eastbound and westbound traffic lanes of Alessandro Boulevard, between Apple Blossom Lane and Chara Avenue, then the northbound and southbound traffic lanes of Kitching Street, between Bay Avenue and Brodiaea Avenue.
