On Wednesday, September 28, 2022, at 12:21 PM, deputies from the Hemet Sheriff’s Station responded to a report of two people who had fallen while rock climbing in a remote area of the Tahquitz Peak area near Idyllwild, known as Tahquitz Rock. The popular rock-climbing spot is located in the San Jacinto mountain range near Idyllwild. A Riverside County Sheriff’s Department helicopter flew to the area and provided an exact location of the fall for ground personnel. Paramedics from CalFire/Riverside County Fire Department hiked to the location where the subjects had fallen and confirmed they were deceased.

The Riverside County Coroner’s Bureau assumed this investigation and no foul play is suspected. The subjects were safely removed from the area by the Riverside Mountain Rescue Unit and the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department Aviation Unit. The subjects have been identified as Chelsea Walsh, a 33-year-old resident of Huntington Beach, and Gavin Escobar, a 31-year-old resident of Huntington Beach.
