On May 30, 2022, at 2:10 AM, Thermal Station patrol deputies responded to the 49200 block of Cesar Chavez, in the city of Coachella, in reference to a 25-year-old male that had been shot multiple times. The investigation revealed the victim was walking to his vehicle in the parking lot, when a male suspect approached him, pulled out a firearm and shot him multiple times, then fled the scene. The victim was transported to a local hospital where he is recovering from his injuries. The investigation was assumed by the Thermal Station Investigations Bureau.
During the investigation, the suspect was positively identified as Issac Vargas, a 22-year-old resident of Coachella. On June 16, 2022, at 5:20 PM, Vargas was located at his residence, in the 84200 block Redondo Sur, in the city of Coachella. With the assistance of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team, the Thermal Stations Investigations Bureau, served a search warrant at the residence and Vargas was taken into custody without incident. Vargas was booked at the John Benoit Detention Center, in the city of Indio, for attempt homicide.
