On August 18, 2020, deputies assigned to the Southern Coachella Valley Community Services District were conducting a shooting investigation. The suspect, Gutberto Rodriguez, 29 of Mecca was located in the area of Lincoln Street and Avenue 62 as a passenger of a vehicle. When a vehicle stop was conducted, the vehicle attempted to evade deputies. A pursuit was initiated and terminated in the area of Avenue 60 and Johnson Street when Rodriguez ran from the vehicle. It was determined that Rodriguez held the driver of the vehicle at gun point and instructed the driver to evade deputies. After a lengthy search, Rodriguez was not located
On September 3, 2020, deputies with the assistance of the Riverside Sheriff’s Department Major Crimes Unit (MCU) located Rodriguez within the 101000 block of See Breeze Drive, within the unincorporated area of North Shore. Rodriguez was taken into custody without incident and arrested for the following charges: kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon, shooting at an occupied vehicle and resisting arrest; among others. Rodriguez was booked into jail.
