On Sunday, July 19, 2020, about 4:40 PM, Jurupa Valley Patrol Deputies were dispatched to an attempted armed carjacking that occurred in the 5400 block of Rutile St. in Jurupa Valley. During the attempted carjacking, the suspect pointed a firearm at the victim demanding the victim’s vehicle. The victim was able to escape unharmed and called 911. During the initial investigation, patrol deputies were able to recover evidence linking Chris Velazquez, 21-year-old Jurupa Valley resident, as the primary suspect. Chris Velazquez is a documented gang member to a local criminal street gang.
In early August, members of the Regional Gang Taskforce, Region 7, and members of the Jurupa Valley Special Enforcement Team which is out of the Jurupa Valley Patrol Station, assumed the investigation. Over the course of several weeks, Taskforce officers were able to establish enough probable cause to author a search warrant for Velazquez’ residence.
On August 27, 2020, Taskforce Officers from region 4 and region 7 of the Regional Gang Taskforce, along with Jurupa Valley Special Enforcement Team and member of the Sheriff’s Department Special Enforcement Bureau (SWAT) served a search warrant in the 8100 block of Jurupa Rd., Jurupa Valley. During the service of the search warrant, Velazquez was taken into custody without incident. He was arrested and later booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center for Attempted Armed Carjacking and Criminal Street Gang Membership.
The Region 7 Gang Task Force is one of six teams composing the Riverside County Regional Gang Task Force, with the goal of combating criminal street gangs throughout Riverside County. The Region 7 Gang Task Force is composed of members from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department and California Highway Patrol.
