On Wednesday, April 01, 2020 at 6:22 PM, deputies assigned to the Thermal Sheriff’s Station, Southern Coachella Community Services District, Agricultural Liaison, and Coachella Community Action Team were dispatched to a call of a stolen vehicle.  Deputies located the vehicle in the area of Polk Street and Martinez Road, in the unincorporated area of Thermal.  Deputies attempted to stop the vehicle and a pursuit was initiated.  The pursuit covered several roadways in the south county of Thermal and began heading eastbound towards the unincorporated community of Mecca.  The driver ultimately drove onto a sidewalk near the Mecca Elementary school, located in the 65000 block of Coahilla Street in the unincorporated community of Mecca.  The driver, Carlos Octavio Cerros (21) from Mecca, fled the vehicle and ran through the elementary school, heading eastbound.

He was taken into custody by deputies shortly after residents spotted him in their backyard.  Cerros was booked at Indio jail for felony evading, driving a stolen vehicle, and parole violation.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department encourages anyone with additional information regarding this incident to contact Agricultural Liaison Deputy Lorton at Thermal Sheriff’s Station at (760) 863-8990.
