This course will provide students with the basic skills and knowledge necessary to safely and tactically deploy an M-16/AR-15 style patrol rifle in the field. This course will include the use of classroom instruction and practical application on the range.  

Topics covered; department policy and procedure, case law, force options, legal and moral options when deploying patrol rifle, ammunition and expectations. The patrol rifle use, nomenclature of weapon system, weapons breakdown/maintenance, safe handling of rifle. Students will practice using their patrol rifle in several scenarios. 

Successful completion of this course satisfies the legislative training mandate to possess short barrel rifles as specified in Penal Code section 33220(b) and the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) requirement to possess long barrel rifles as specified in the Commission Regulation 1081.

Must be currently employed full time by a California law enforcement agency as a sworn peace officer.  Must be authorized to possess a “California Assault Rifle” and high capacity magazines.  California compliant rifles or rifles with “bullet buttons” are not allowed. Also see required equipment listed below.
