For the past several months, the areas covered by the Palm Desert and Thermal Station have seen an increase in mail theft and vehicle burglaries. The La Quinta Special Enforcement Team and Palm Desert Special Enforcement Team joined forces with the goal of identifying the suspects responsible for the thefts. During their operation, the suspects were identified as Richard Otis, 30-years-old of Palm Desert and Christian Nevarez, 35-years-old of Indio. The investigation revealed Otis and Nevarez were committing the thefts and using the victim’s identities to purchase items from local businesses. A search warrant was authored for their residences. A search was served at Otis’ residence by the La Quinta Special Enforcement Team. Otis was located and taken into custody. During the search warrant, an additional fifty victims were identified by locating their personal identify information. Additionally, an estimated $10,000.00 of stolen property was recovered. A search warrant was served at Nevarez’ residence by the Palm Desert Special Enforcement Team. Nevarez was taken into custody. During a search warrant, an additional thirty victims were identified by locating their personal identifying information. Otis and Nevarez were booked into the Riverside County jail in Indio.
