The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene on June 9, 2019. He has been identified as Ysidro Osornio-Velasquez, a 32-year-old resident of Menifee. This case remains an ongoing investigation.
On Sunday, June 9, 2019, at approximately 3:50 AM, deputies from the Perris Sheriff's Station received a report of an attempted carjacking in the area of Scott Road and Hahn Road, in the city of Menifee. The suspect brandished a weapon and attempted to take the victim's vehicle. The victim fled the scene, and during his departure, the suspect shot at him. The victim is being treated at a local hospital for his injuries.
The suspect remained in the area, and at 4:48 AM, deputies received a second report of a carjacking. The suspect, further described as a Hispanic male, brandished a weapon and carjacked the victim. The suspect fled the location in the victim's white BMW sedan. The vehicle was located in the city of Lake Elsinore and when deputies attempted to stop the vehicle a pursuit ensued. Deputies received assistance from the Murrieta Police Department who aided in the pursuit.
The pursuit ended in a residential area within the 32000 block of Garland Lane. After the suspect stopped the stolen vehicle, he produced a firearm and a Deputy / Officer Involved Shooting occurred. No deputies, officers or citizens were injured during the incident. A K-9 from the Murrieta Police Department sustained an injury during the incident due to gunshot wound. The injury was not life-threatening.
Investigators from the Riverside County Sheriff's Central Homicide Unit (CHU) responded to the scene and assumed the investigation. Murrieta Police Investigators and staff also responded to the scene and information specific to the Murrieta Officers' involvement will be released at a later date by the Murrieta Police Department.
The deputies and officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave per Department policies. The involved deputies' and officers' name will not be released at this time.
