On Thursday, July 25, 2019, at 3:28 AM, an officer from the Desert Hot Springs Police Department stopped a vehicle occupied by two subjects, in the area of Acoma Avenue and Ocotillo Road, Desert Hot Springs.  During the traffic stop the driver placed the vehicle in reverse and collided with the Desert Hot Springs’ police officer and his police vehicle, resulting in an officer involved shooting.

The suspect fled the location and a vehicle a pursuit ensued. The pursuit ended in a residential area within the 66800 block of 4th Street, Desert Hot Springs. The suspect was injured during the shooting, and was transported to a local hospital where he was treated for minor injuries. The identity of the suspect is pending due to a continuing investigation.

There were no additional injuries to members of the public, or officers. There are no outstanding suspects and no threat to public safety. The passenger in the vehicle was questioned and released.

The Desert Hot Springs’ police officer sustained minor injury during the incident. The officer involved in the shooting was placed on administrative leave per Desert Hot Springs Police Department policy. The officer’s name will not be released at this time. 

Investigators from the Riverside County Sheriff's Central Homicide Unit (CHU) responded to the scene and assumed the investigation. The Riverside County Sheriff's Department encourages anyone with information regarding the incident to contact Central Homicide Investigator Gomez at (951) 955-2777
