On Tuesday, March 12, 2019, at approximately 1:45 AM, officers from Desert Hot Springs Police Department received a report of an assault with a deadly weapon, involving a firearm, at a residence within the 67600 block of San Gorgonio Road, Desert Hot Springs.  Officers responded and confirmed the information provided to Dispatch.  Witnesses indicated an adult male was shooting a weapon within a residence while family members, including children, were present.  Based on the circumstances, the Desert Hot Springs Police Department requested additional law enforcement personnel, and members of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department responded to assist.

Sheriff’s Deputies and Desert Hot Springs Police Officers established a perimeter around the residence and confirmed occupants were still inside the home with the male suspect.  Deputies contacted the male, who was armed with a handgun, and a Deputy Involved Shooting occurred.  Members of the Sheriff’s Department Special Enforcement Bureau conducted a rescue of a family member within the residence and took the suspect into custody.   The suspect was identified as Juan Gonzalez Jr., a 47-year-old resident of Desert Hot Springs. No deputies, officers or citizens were injured during the incident.

Investigators from the Riverside County Sheriff's Central Homicide Unit (CHU) responded to the scene and assumed the investigation. The deputy involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave per Department policy.
