On May 6, 2019, about 4:54 PM, officers responded to a report of a shooting in a shopping center parking lot, located in the 23500 block of Sunnymead Ranch Parkway in Moreno Valley.  Multiple 911 callers reported a 20 year-old black male adult wearing all black was shooting across the parking lot toward a group of males standing outside a business, jeopardizing numerous bystanders nearby.  Officers arrived within minutes, detaining multiple subjects in the area related to the investigation.  Thankfully, no one was injured during this attack.

Further investigation by the Moreno Valley Police Department (MVPD) Special Enforcement Team led to the identification of the shooter as well as several other involved subjects.  In the days following the shooting, multiple search warrants were authored and executed in Riverside and San Bernardino Counties.

On May 20, 2019, Sterlyn Smith, a 44 year-old documented gang member residing in Adelanto, was arrested in the city of Riverside.  Smith was in possession of a loaded stolen handgun.  The suspect was later booked into Robert Presley Detention Center for multiple offenses, including assault and weapons charges in addition to participation in a criminal street gang.

MVPD and the Riverside Sheriff’s Department will not tolerate gang violence in our communities.  These criminals will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.  Anyone with information regarding this shooting is encouraged to contact Deputy Reyes at 951.486.6700.
