On Sunday, June 10, 2018, at approximately 11:00 PM, Riverside County Sheriff’s Department deputies from the Thermal Station responded to the area of Berdoo Canyon Road east of Dillon Road to assist the Joshua Tree National Park Service and Bureau of Land Management rangers with the investigation into an officer involved shooting in the area.
The Sheriff’s Central Homicide Unit also responded and assumed control of the investigation. The preliminary investigation revealed Bureau of Land Management officers responded to assist Joshua Tree National Park Service Rangers in the remote area of Berdoo Canyon Road east of Dillion Road, with an illegal off-roading and failure to yield investigation. During their investigation, a Bureau of Land Management officer attempted to stop an off-road vehicle and an officer involved shooting occurred. An adult female in the off-road vehicle was injured during the shooting and transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. An adult male was also detained at the scene. No officers were injured during this incident. The suspect’s names will not be released at this time, pending the ongoing investigation.
The Bureau of Land Management Officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave per their Department policy. The involved officer’s name will not be released at this time. This is an active investigation and no additional details are available at this time.
