Press Release: Public Safety Awareness Announcement
Agency: Cabazon Station
Station Area: Cabazon
Written Date: 05/02/2019 Time: 12:00 PM
Incident Date: 05/02/2019 Time: N/A
Incident Location: Whitewater River, Whitewater
Reporting Officer: Sergeant John Carlberg
File Number(s): N/A

As the weather in Southern California heats up, so does the temptation to cool off.  Many visitors come to the Whitewater River to get into the water to cool off.  The Whitewater River flows south under Interstate 10, in Whitewater, and then into the Palm Springs area. Many visitors exit the Whitewater Rd, I-10 exit, and drive to the rushing water.  The Sheriff’s Department reminds individuals, in this area of the Whitewater River, it is clearly marked with many “No Trespassing” signs year-round.  However, it is not uncommon for many to disregard the “No Trespassing” signs and get into the water.  The volume and velocity of the water flow in the Whitewater River can be very high, especially this time of year.  In the past, illegal entry into the Whitewater River has resulted in the loss of life because of drowning.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department is committed to public safety and would like to remind the public that it is not only illegal to be in the Whitewater River area, but also extremely dangerous to enter the water.  During this summer season, there will be extra patrols by deputies from the Cabazon Station in the Whitewater River area to prevent trespassers from entering the water and endangering themselves. Violators will be cited.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department recommends those looking to seek relief from the heat use other resources available in the area, such as, public swimming pools, water parks or other recreation areas with bodies of water.
