Reporting Officer: Sergeant Michael Canizales
File Number(s): MG190660002

Details:

On Thursday, March 7, 2019, at approximately 11:11 AM, a deputy from the Cabazon Sheriff’s Station, assigned to the Morongo Indian Reservation, was in the area of Seminole Drive and Morongo Trail when he observed a vehicle driving in an erratic manner.  The deputy attempted to conduct a traffic enforcement stop believing the driver was possibly DUI, when the driver failed to yield.  The driver of the vehicle-maintained highway speeds for approximately two miles when one of the vehicle’s tires flattened, and the engine began to billow smoke.

The driver intentionally drove off the freeway and down a dirt embankment.  The vehicle crashed into a dirt berm and the vehicle became disabled. The driver and the passenger exited the vehicle and ran from the scene.  Deputies responded to the scene and apprehended both subjects. The driver was identified as Dakota Fowler, age 23, from Yucaipa and Misty Laur, age 20, from Desert Hot Springs.  Investigation revealed the vehicle was an unreported stolen vehicle out of the city of Banning.

Fowler was arrested and later booked at Smith Correctional Facility in Banning.
