On October 29, 2009, at 1:40 p.m., Moreno Valley Police Officers responded to the Western Union located in the 12200 block of Heacock Avenue to investigate a shooting that reportedly just occurred.
As officers arrived at the scene, they learned that a male suspect tried to rob the business and was shot in the process by the business owner. The suspect fled the area in a dark-colored Mercedes Benz.
Information that was subsequently discovered revealed that earlier in the afternoon, at 1:35 p.m. a Western Union employee had just returned to the business carrying a bag containing the business proceeds. The employee was confronted by the suspect inside the front lobby and a struggle ensued when the suspect tried to forcibly steal the money. The store owner noticed the robbery taking place and armed himself with a small caliber handgun. Fearing for the safety of his employee, the business owner shot the suspect in the upper thigh before the suspect ran outside to an awaiting vehicle. The employee was not injured during the attack and kept possession of the bag containing the money.
The investigation was continued by the Robbery Suppression Team and the Moreno Valley Investigations Unit. Information was quickly developed indicating that the suspect was being medically treated at a local hospital for the gunshot wound he sustained during the attempted robbery.
The suspect, Issa Mohamed Tejan, 18 years, of Moreno Valley was taken into custody and booked at the Robert Presley Detention Center for attempt robbery.
Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact Officer Jonathan Bodnar of the Robbery Suppression Team at 951-247-8700.
