Deputies from the Jurupa Valley Station responded to a call of an armed robbery that occurred at the Circle K convenience store on the corner of Magnolia and Mckinley Streets in Home Gardens. The reporting party indicated the suspect was armed with a large butcher knife and had fled from the location with lottery scratchers and cigarettes. Within minutes, deputies received a second armed robbery call from the AM/PM store across the street, where the suspect had the same description as the first call and was also armed with a large butcher knife.

While responding to the calls, deputies relayed the information to Corona Police Department and Corona Police detained the suspect near the intersection of Estelle and McKinley Streets.

During the investigation, it was determined the suspect first went into the Circle K store and demanded money from the register totaling $62.15. He also took several lottery tickets and cigarettes. He left that store and went directly to the AM/PM store where he demanded money from that register, which totaled over $403.00. Additionally, he took cigarettes and energy drinks from the location and forced the employees to wait in the back room and count to 400 before calling the police. He threatened he would cut them with the knife if they did not follow his instructions.

The suspect Ruben Hernandez (01-26-79), of Home Gardens, was arrested for 2 counts of robbery. Due to his additional actions at the AM/PM store, he will also be charged with kidnapping, false imprisonment and terrorist threats. He was booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center.

Anyone with additional information on this crime is encouraged to contact the Jurupa Valley Station at (951) 955-2600.
