Requirements For Hire And Promotion

All candidates interested in a law enforcement career, whether it is in a sworn capacity as a Deputy Sheriff, in a classified capacity as a Correctional Deputy, or in other classified staff positions as Office Assistant, Sheriff's Service Officer or Sheriff's 911 Communication Officer positions (see listing of all authorized positions in this document), must meet several selection criteria. County required minimum education and experience requirements must be met. In addition, candidates must pass any pre-employment examination required by the County and the Sheriff's Department. Most classifications require candidates to pass a written examination, oral examination or hiring interview and an extensive background investigation. Deputy Sheriff and Correctional Deputy applicants must also pass a physical agility test. After a candidate has passed all the necessary pre-employment tests, including a background investigation, a recommendation is made to the Sheriff for final approval and appointment.

Selections for promotion within the Department are made in a manner somewhat similar to new appointments. Deputy Sheriff and Correctional Deputy staff must, in most cases, pass a written examination, and participate in an oral examination and a promotability assessment for promotion. Candidates are then ranked based on their performance in all phases of the selection process. The Sheriff makes final promotion decisions. Classified position promotional processes are conducted in accordance with County requirements for the particular classification. Classified employees qualified for promotion and certified by Riverside County Human Resources are interviewed by the Commander and/or Chief Deputy of the station/bureau or unit; final promotion decisions are made by the Sheriff.

Promotion to one of the six Chief Deputy positions or one of the three Assistant Sheriff positions is based solely on appointment by the Sheriff, provided all classification standards established by Riverside County Human Resources are met. The Assistant Sheriffs serve at the will of the Sheriff.
