Mission Statement
Desert Sheriff's Search and Rescue (DSSAR) is an organization of local volunteers dedicated to providing a specialized service to desert area citizens of Riverside County. It will conduct search and rescue missions, evidence searches, and respond to other disaster or emergency situations. Based at the Palm Desert Sheriff's station, DSSAR will provide appropriate support to the Sheriff's Department and may cooperate with other agencies as deemed necessary.

History
Desert Sheriff's Search and Rescue (DSSAR) was formed in 1994 and incorporated March 1995. DSSAR began with 8 strong hikers and has evolved into a highly trained and respected team of men and women volunteers (unpaid professionals). We are a nonprofit organization and are funded by donations by people like you.

Prospective Member Information
Welcome. Your interest in our organization is appreciated. We are always looking for good recruits for our search and rescue team. Candidates should be at least 18 years old, reasonably fit, community service oriented persons who have the time and flexible schedules to attend the monthly weeknight meeting, monthly weekend training, a monthly rescue squad meeting, a monthly weekend hike, plus special events and call-outs. Members easily devote 20 hours or more per month to such activities.

We ask that prospective members attend at least two team meetings and trainings as an observer prior to formal application. We have a 10-mile qualifying hike with a 2000-foot elevation gain that must be completed in 5 hours. Once these requirements are met, we encourage you to apply to become a Sheriff's Department Volunteer. All SAR team members must pass a background check conducted by the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

Once approved as a volunteer and having the field qualifications, you are authorized to participate in team missions. You will need to purchase uniforms, a SAR pack and certain personal gear, and subscribe to the team beeper service. We use group paging for mission notification. We are on 24-hour call, sometimes responding in the middle of the night. Search and rescue is a rewarding community service. We are looking for a few good people who have the time and desire to train for and conduct SAR missions. If you enjoy the outdoors and want to learn about search methods, tracking, GPS, map and compass, victim stabilization and transport, helicopter safety, etc; then join in the fun.
