9-1-1 is the emergency telephone number for your town. We want to show you how to call 9-1-1 in case you ever need help from the Police Department, Fire Department or an ambulance.

THERE ARE FOUR REASONS TO MAKE AN EMERGENCY CALL:
1. To help someone who is hurt and needs help.
2. If you smell smoke or see a fire.
3. If you see someone stealing something or hurting someone.
4. If you need help fast for any reason.
REMEMBER DON'T CALL 9-1-1 TO ASK QUESTIONS OR TO PLAY A JOKE.
HOW TO MAKE AN EMERGENCY CALL TO 9-1-1
l. Stay calm. Don't get excited. Take a deep breath to relax.
2. Tell the person who answers the phone what is wrong like this:
3. Tell them the exact address where the emergency is at...remember to give the full address, even your apartment number, if you live in an apartment.
- "My house is on fire.''
- "My daddy is hurt real bad--he can't move."
- "I hear a noise outside my back door and see a shadow through the window."
- "A strange man told me to get in his car and I ran away."
4. Tell them the phone number and address that you are calling from.
5. Tell them your name.
6. Do not hang up...until the person at the police or fire department tells you that you should. They need ask you questions to help the police officer, fire fighters, and paramedics find you as fast as they can.
7. If you r 9-1-1 call doesn't work dial "0" for the operator.
OTHER IMPORTANT NEWS ABOUT 9-1-1
1. Most telephone booths in your town are set up so you can call 9-l-1 for help without putting any money in. Just pick up the phone. Listen for the dial tone and dial 9-1-1.
2. If you know someone who cannot talk or hear, we can explain to them how to use 9-1-1 with their special typing machines. They should call 1-800-772-3140 and we will tell them how it works.
3. A person who calls 9-1-1 and faints while talking can be found because of the special way 9-1-1 works here. We will send help to the place you are calling from.
