Corneal & Tissure Donation Program
Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner is in a unique position to assist impaired people to see again, to repair damaged or burnt skin, to fight leukemia or repair damaged heart valves.
We work closely with OneLegacy Donor Network to acquire needed tissue to help the living recover.
In the past, Federal Government Code (Section 27491.47) permitted corneal tissue to be removed from a decedent without family permission provided there was no known objection when an autopsy was performed.
Now, however, a representative of the transplant donor network contacts the families of suitable donors, as soon as possible following the death, to ask for permission to use the decedent's tissue to help others. The tissue bank recovers and utilizes:
- Corneal tissue for sight restoration
- Skin for grafts
- Bone and bone marrow
- Heart valves
- Soft and connective tissue.
